BBC Three Counties Radio Visits the Parish

Wednesday 22 November 2006 was the day the Parish went on air. For two hours the Parish was live on Three Counties Radio.

Luke Ashmead and his team arrived around 12:30 complete with mobile studio and whilst he and his producer, Karen Davies, got to know the people who had turned up from the four corners of the Parish, the technical guys unwound the aerial from somewhere inside what, from outward appearances, was a very ordinary estate car but which, on closer inspection was crammed with electronics.

Karen with her clipboard soon had everyone organised and at 13:00 sharp, according to a rather decrepit looking 'atomic' clock, we went on air.

Luke's interview technique appeared to be quite spontaneous, except for a few scribbled notes on a pad and although everything seemed very casual, Karen was there with the clock, timing it all to the second. "Please don't all go quiet whilst we are on air " said Luke. "We like some background noise". This took quite a while to get used to but gradually the polite silence dissolved into a background "rhubarb rhubarb"!

First on was David Livingstone, the Chairman of the Parish Council, who explained what we are and what we do.- No, we are nothing to do with the Church, although the Parish embraces all or part of several old 'Church Parishes'. With a population now exceeding 20,000 we are the largest Parish in Milton Keynes covering two electoral wards, Emerson Valley and Furzton.

Various local issues were covered, including the Parish Council's role in the planning process, local neighbourhood policing, allotments etc., and the inevitable question of Dog Bins - Luke had obviously done his homework.

With the clock ticking by, it was then time for the news and traffic report. So we were off air for some minutes and everyone relaxed. Several people who had heard the broadcast popped in to see what was going on. Tea, coffee and sandwiches had been laid on and people took the opportunity to have a bite to eat, not at all what you might imagine a radio program might be like. Just when things were getting going again the 'Atomic Clock' stopped! - flat batteries and no spares! - slight panic! Fortunately someone who lived nearby rushed home and returned with a large kitchen wall clock and the afternoon was saved.

Interviews continued throughout the afternoon.
Andy Ridgway talking to Luke Ashmead
Andy Ridgway talked to Luke about the work he and Alex Gowen are doing with the young people of the Parish.

David White talked about the connection between Bletchley Park and Shenley Brook End, telling how Alan Turing, the code breaker, lived in the village for some time during the war.

Kath Yates and Vera Hoare, two residents who have lived in the village most of their lives, talked about the changes they have seen over the years. They could name eight farms that were once within the Parish but were no more.

Eric Cooper and Keith Thomas explained the work they have been doing in developing web sites for Shenley Brook End Village and the new development in Kingsmead as part of a Milton Keynes Heritage initiative.

Jean Nicholas, Vice Chair of the Parish Council, made the point that although the official title of the Parish Council was Shenley Brook End & Tattenhoe, the Parish also encompassed Emerson Valley, Furzton, Kingsmead, Shenley Lodge, Westcroft and Tattenhoe Park. She appealed for people in these areas to take an active part in Parish life.

The afternoon was rounded off by David Livingstone who thanked Three Counties Radio for giving the Parish the opportunity to present itself to a wider audience.
